The Fund for a Jewish Future

The Fund for a Jewish Future (FJF) is an endowment within the The Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh that will generate funds to build and sustain into the future a vibrant and dynamic Pittsburgh Jewish community. FJF will fund transformative change in our community, instilling in people of all ages a strong Jewish identity and a desire to participate in Jewish programs and experiences and to pass the love of Judaism on to the next generation.

The Fund for a Jewish Future is based on the notion that formal and informal Jewish learning and engagement are the most effective transmitters of Jewish history, tradition and values. In this case, "Jewish learning" is defined in the broadest sense, to include formal classroom learning as well as experiential learning at Jewish summer camp, in Jewish youth groups, on teen trips to Israel, via Jewish holiday celebrations for families, etc. The options for involvement must be varied enough to address  widely differing backgrounds, skill levels and interests – and these offerings must be available to all who wish to learn, regardless of affiliation or ability to pay tuition.

FJF is a community-wide endeavor spearheaded by Co-Chairs David and Cindy Shapira, who, along with the Giant Eagle Foundation, have committed to a lead gift of $4Million in the form of a matching grant. In a new innovation for Pittsburgh, this lead gift will not only match contributions, which are payable over five years, but will immediately advance the income on the entire pledge amount beginning in year one, so that an impact can be made quickly.
